Candles can be seen represent the three levels of human reality: the wax corresponds to the physical body, the wick to the mind, and the flame to the soul, spirit, or Higher Self. Candles are the perfect messenger for sending thought into the spiritual place to be manifested. As the candle burns, the intent with which it is imbued resigns the physical plane and is carried into the spiritual plane by the flame. Fire is a powerful element, so when a spell is carried by a candle flame, it is transported to the Universe with much more energy than intent alone, and therefore becomes more potent. Best of all, because candle magick requires at its most basic level only a candle, a match, and intent, candle spells are an excellent way for a beginner witch to exercise his or her new-found magickal power.

Enhancing a simple candle spell through the use of correspondence provides a way to fine-tune the purpose of the energy associated with the spell. Multiple correspondences can be used to strengthen a candle spell. Color, timing, direction, and accessory correspondences such as herbs, stones, or runes, can all lend additional energy to the simplest of candle spells.
