Sympathetic magick is the idea that items that have similar qualities can be used to represent each other in magickal work, or to affect each other magickally. It is based on the principle that “like attracts like”, and that the energies and properties of an herb, stone, or color will stimulate those same energies when used during magickal work. When an item with similar qualities is used to represent another, or to lend its energies to a spell or ritual, this is known as a “correspondence”.
Magickal correspondences help focus intent and direct energy within spell work. They can act as keys, embodying both spiritual and physical energy through symbolism. Because human nature connects like with like, correspondences can unlock energy for that which we seek from that which we see, smell, hear, touch, and taste. Correspondences can be based on characteristics such as color, shape, aroma, timing, physical properties, or metaphysical energies. For example, growing plants are green, and can therefore represent increase and prosperity. Fire is transformational, so burning a magickal charm in the flame of candle can transform that desire into reality.
